Love chocolate brownies? Then you'll fall for chocolate caramel brownies. Fudge brownies topped with creamy, chewy caramel.

Don't worry, this caramel chocolate brownie recipe is very easy to make. But ohhhh so hard to resist.

Rich and gooey simple sauce makes a sweet change for this old favorite. Can you resist candy coated brownies?

I didn't think so! Try them today.

Fudge Brownie Recipe

Originally, I made this fudge brownie recipe with 6 ounces of unsweetened chocolate. Boy did that make a dark fudge brownie.

But then I remembered that not everyone likes extra dark chocolate. A fact I don't understand but occasionally remember.

So the choice is yours. For extra dark (and extra delicious) brownies use 6 ounces or 6 squares of unsweetened baking chocolate.

For not quite so dark (but still delicious) brownies use 4 ounces or 4 squares of unsweetened baking chocolate.

The amount of sugar varies according to how much unsweetened chocolate you use.

So for extra dark use 1 1/2 cups of sugar. For the not quite so dark use 1 cup of sugar.

No other changes to the recipe are necessary.

Ok, on to the actual brownie recipe you came here for!

Actual Fudge Brownie Recipe

Time to make some chocolate caramel brownies.  Here's what you'll need...

4 ounces/squares (113g) or 6 ounces/squares (170g) of unsweetened baking chocolate*

1 stick or 1/2 cup (113g) of margarine

1 cup (192g) or 1 1/2 cups (288g) of sugar*

2 eggs

3/4 cup (75g) of all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon (4g) of vanilla extract

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180 C/gas 4). Thoroughly grease or spray a 9 x 9 inch  (23 x 23 x 5 cm) pan. Set aside.

Use a medium bowl. Place the margarine and chocolate, broken into pieces, into the bowl.

Cover with plastic wrap to prevent splattering. Microwave on high for about 1 minute.

Stir. Microwave again for about 15 seconds. Stir till completely melted and smooth.

Microwave another 15 seconds if not yet melted. Be extra careful not to burn the chocolate!

Add the rest of the ingredients (*remember to adjust sugar according to amount of chocolate used!) and stir vigorously till mixed well.

Pour brownie batter into your prepared pan.

Alternately, you can make brownies with caramel in the middle. Pour about half of the batter into the pan. Reserve the other half for later.

Set aside.

Time to make the easy caramel sauce. Can't have chocolate caramel brownies without it!

The fudge brownies are great without it. But awesome with it.

Caramel Topping

11 ounces (311g) or 1 bag of Kraft Caramel Bits

1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon (18g) of evaporated milk

Pour caramels and evaporated milk into a small bowl. Heat in microwave about 30 seconds.

Stir, then microwave another 30 seconds or so. Stir till smooth.

If not melted, microwave about 10 seconds more. Stir. Careful burns easily!

Carefully pour onto fudge brownie batter. You can try to spread the caramel topping. Or leave it where it falls.

It's like frosting without the extra work.

Or you can pour the caramel sauce onto 1/2 of the brownie batter in the pan. Then pour the reserved batter on top. MMMMM brownies with a caramel center.

Either way they're tasty.

Now that you know how to make chocolate caramel brownies, get started. It's really easy to do. Isn't a fudge brownie smothered in a golden, creamy caramel topping worth the effort? Oh it so is! And  the compliments you get will be sweet too.
